So, you may be asking yourself, “What is 6 Degrees of Separation?” Well, it is a theory that everyone and everything is six steps, or less, away from anyone else or anything else on the planet. (I’ve been playing this game for my entire life- just ask my elementary school teachers, I always had someone I knew that did something. Seriously. I have a really big family.) So, what does The Bacon have to do with this? Well, Wikipedia tells me that “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” was a game created by college students in Pennsylvania (yay!) in which you connect Kevin Bacon to other actors/actresses by way of co-stars. At Sew the Show, Becca and Katie took it a few steps further to include connections by directors, writers, and relationships- and we just moved one degree at a time. LOOK! There are all of our pretty faces!
Right, let’s get on with it!
Today, Patti from simple.blessed sewed along with the movie Silver Linings Playbook. Though I did not have a blog or ever have an intention of starting one at the start of this tour, I quickly joined in on the fun of claiming actors and movies by connecting to 10 Things I Hate About You by way of Julia Stiles (she played J.Law’s sister in Silver Linings Playbook).
10 Things I Hate About You is a 1999 hit featuring Stiles as a high school senior who runs against the grain. She loves literature, indie rock, and giving teachers, mankind and her younger sister a hard time. I was in high school when 10 Things came out, so how could I not be obsessed?! Sadly, the movie ended my puppy love crush on Andrew Keegan as he played a conceited jerk. The best thing to come from this movie? It began my love affair with Heath Ledger and Australian accents! You can see the top 10 reasons why he is the best here.
There are so many classic looks in this movie: v-neck shirts, button downs, raglans, cargo pants. Where was I going to get my inspiration? As I re-watched the movie for easily the 75th time, one quote stuck in my mind, “Hey! Your little Rambo look is out, Kat!” And of course, since Heath Ledger’s character, Patrick, is completely swoon-worthy, I couldn’t leave him out! I combined Patrick’s tough-guy style and camo and came up with this:
Luckily enough for me, I had one of my hubby’s unserviceable uniforms laying around and was able to pull enough workable space to make the jacket. To say BuddahBoy was thrilled was an understatement! He was so excited to be wearing an “ARMY man jacket!” Of course, he also shared his disappointment that it did not have a velcro name tag. sigh.
Whew! There are a LOT of seams on the ARMY uniform, so I had to get a bit creative while simultaneously keeping some really cool features – I Love that pocket! BB has already had it full of Hot Wheels!
This was BB’s first time ever posing for pictures with mama made clothing, so there were more outtakes than usable shots. Since I am his Mom, I still think his outtakes are adorable and need to show some!
That middle picture cracks me up! I told him to squat. :O) I will never try that pose again.
You might notice that something is amiss about those buttons. I had plans to use the old uniform’s buttons, but failed to accommodate the height of the button when making those blasted buttonholes (see the top button, wouldn’t it be so cute if it was functional?)! Since I was in a rush, I just used on-hand buttons, but will get to the store soon for a suitable replacement.
I feel like Patrick could have worn this jacket in his epic stadium-serenade..
Have you seen enough photos? Me neither! Here are the last two I will share. We took these photos at my sister in law’s house. My nephew went inside and when he returned, he insisted BB take a photo with a cap gun.
Want to know what else was on my sewing table that didn’t get finished? Well, that would be Kat’s signature red raglan (unshrunk)
and a nod to younger sister Bianca’s epic crop-top and tulle prom dress for my daughter. I’m sure ClaireBear’s version will be ready in the spring.
What 90’s movie sew-along would be complete without a nod to the most classic 90’s style: flannel? Well, I am happy to oblige! I updated the look a bit by layering a quilted vest and accessorizing with some faux pearls and of course, my purple glasses. If I had made this a little bit longer, it would pair well with some leggings to really bring the look into 2015!
Since 10 Things I Hate About You features so many great actors and actresses (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Heath Ledger, Andrew Keegan, Larisa Oleynick, and Gabrielle Union to name a few), check in tomorrow to see what Ajaire over at Call Ajaire has waiting for you!
In the meantime, head back to Sew The Show, Amy is guest posting there with another Surprise Pit Stop!
If you all haven’t been following the 6 Degrees of Separation tour, do yourself the favor of checking in with those that have already posted and be sure to follow along for the future posts. Katie has a handy dandy link party at the bottom of her 6 Degrees post at the creative counselor.
So tell me: What is your favorite 90’s look that you would love to see make a comeback or get an upgrade?
